Reason why therapists sometimes say or do the wrong thing
4. They endorse dangerous or illegal practices
I will never forget stumbling across a Youtube video of a popular young female creator describing her experiences with therapists. In the video she described a therapist repeatedly trying to push her to take illegal drugs to solve all of her problems.
I was horrified by the behavior of this person who was supposed to be a professional.
I couldn't believe what I had just watched. Not only had I heard the story but thousands of other people did as well. Thank goodness the creator of the video ended the therapeutic relationship and was able to find someone much more sane and helpful.
If your therapist is trying to push you to take anything stronger than tap water, leave immediately. While there has been a surge of interest in illicit drugs and shaman ceremonies to heal trauma I must caution you against them. Mixing any of these substance with some of your current or past medications (yes things you have taken in the past may still affect you) or known or unknown health conditions can be and has been fatal.
100% drug free and safe, effective techniques for completely resolving the symptoms of trauma are out there, SE and CBT being a few of them.
I hope this series has been helpful and has answered some important questions for you. I know a lot of you out there are hurting and I want you to know that I see you and hear you. It's important to me that I not only offer effective solutions based on the most current research and science but that I also confront the issues I see happening in the field of therapy. Your therapist should create a safe haven from the world. You deserve that as a human being and a paying client. If you aren't getting that, please move on. Your therapist is out there waiting to help you. I'm here for you on your journey to wholeness.
Much love and many blessings,
Meagan
