Help! My family doesn't understand PTSD

One of the most heartbreaking issues I hear from those working through trauma and PTSD involves family. Our biological family can be a source of support and love but sometimes they can be a source of pain and suffering. If you have tried to turn to family members for support but have only been met with hostility, misunderstanding, or even simply dismissal, I would like to introduce you to one of my favorite phrases:
"Don't go to a Chinese restaurant for nachos"
-Christine Hassler
Huh?? This phrase illustrates why turning to family members might be a bad idea. Think about what would happen if you attempted to order a Mexican dish, such as nachos, at a restaurant that specializes in Asain cuisine. Do you think it would be very good? Would they even have the right ingredients to prepare the dish? Probably not. You would be better served going to a restaurant that specialized in Mexican food. One that had all the right ingredients and experience in making what you want. Similarly, turning to people who don't have the experience and "ingredients" (patience, compassion, training) to support you may leave you with a bad taste in your mouth (or worse).
Where to find support
Besides a qualified trauma therapist, your soul family is a great source of support. These are the people who you choose to be in your inner circle and can include teachers, coaches, spouses, and friends. Who is in your inner circle? What qualities earned them a spot? Next time you seek support, cross reference this list and ask yourself, does this person have the qualities of one of my soul family? If not, it might be wise to turn to someone else.
