The Key to Self Worth and Self Confidence - Find What You are Good At

Updated: May 22, 2020

Before I got clear on what I was good at, I often judged myself very harshly for the long list of things I was very bad at. When we are young and exploring, the list of things we suck at might get a little longer then we would like. I now see this as an important developmental stage and not a bad thing at all. It often helps us clarify the skills we have and the ones we want to work on in order to make our dreams a reality.

But what happens when we completely lose sight of the things we excel at? Our natural and hard earned skills and talents? Without any acknowledgment of the many things we are good at, and a constant reminder of the things we are bad at, we may be creating a recipe for low self worth.

If you get your self-esteem from how "hard" you work, you will have a difficult time seeing what you are naturally good at.

Add trauma to the mix and you may find yourself lost for years on a path of things going horribly wrong or may begin to define yourself by how hard you work. While things you are good at may require effort, if your self-esteem depends on how hard you work (the external), you won't be able to connect with the unshakable self confidence that can only come from being grounded in who you are (the internal).

Find What You Are Good At

This is one of the most powerful exercises I have found to remind myself of who I am and regain my confidence. What you are good at is probably hiding in plain sight, these questions will help illuminate all those things. Grab your journal and carve out 15 -20 mins of quiet time.

  1. What comes so easily to you, that you have a hard time understanding why someone else can't do it?

  2. Notice that everyone has a different definition of fun. What do you find fun?

  3. When you were younger, what did you do just for the fun of it?

  4. What do others say you're good at?

Do you notice any patterns? Are there any answers that show up more than once? Chances are good that these are the things you excel at. How can you leverage these things and do more of them? How do you feel when engaging in one of these activities? Do you notice a sense of self confidence?

Self acknowledgment is the key to a healthy sense of self worth and self-confidence

If you struggle with a healthy sense of self worth or confidence begin a daily practice of listing the things you're good at. Acknowledge and celebrate these things! If you want to accelerate your results post your list in the comments below so we can celebrate with you.

As always I'm here for you on your healing journey.

Much love and many blessings,
